5 Tips On How To Effortlessly

Do Scandinavian

At Cozy Ideas, we get a lot of requests from our clients who want us to help them achieve that homely Scandinavian vibe. Scandinavia is a region comprising of three Northern European countries; Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It is an ID style that’s fast gaining in popularity and here are a few reasons why.

5 REASONS WHY SCANDINAVIAN ID WORKS

1. Easy & Inexpensive To Create:
It is a design-style that’s very easy to create, you just need to follow a few simple rules that we outline below. And with inexpensive Scandinavian accessories readily available, going Scandinavian won’t break the bank.

2. Cosy & Comfortable:
The Scandinavian design theme is always very cosy, comfortable and inviting. It’s a look that you would love to come home to and it’s a look that almost all of your guests will appreciate.

3. Bright & Airy:
Going Scandinavian means the home should look bright, airy and spacious. In our space-strapped homes, having an ID style that celebrates openness and light makes our homes feel more spacious.

4. Practical:
One of the great principles of Scandinavian design is that it is very practical. Multi-use functionality is perfect for our smaller homes here in Singapore. Dining tables that can convert when there are more guests, sofas that turn into beds, hidden storage places under the bed — it’s no wonder that we all love Scandinavian design!

5. Personality:
While there are rules for Scandinavian design, it is also a design style that’s very suited for injecting your own personality into. The look of our homes should always be an extension of our personality and Scandinavian design lets us put our stamp of character into our homes. This can be done with colour, photos, art, or through the display of items that mean something to us.

With so much going for Scandinavian design, it is clear to its appeal. Most importantly, it is a design that’s timeless and it’s a design that we won’t get tired of years to come.

PRINCIPLES OF SCANDINAVIAN ID DESIGN

1. Light
Natural light is an important element to Scandinavian design. Scandinavians love getting as much natural light into their homes as possible. That means windows should not be obstructed and large pieces of furniture (like big cupboards) should be kept away from the windows so that more light can enter the home. As for light fixtures, go for warm lighting. Bulbs should not be fluorescent, think incandescent light bulbs that are bright and welcoming.

2. Space
You can consider knocking down walls if they help to maximise the feeling of spaciousness. To help maximise space, furniture like beds and sofas should be kept low. Floating shelves are useful in that they are both functional and sleek. For your furnishings, keep to simple styles and shapes. Their design should feel minimalistic and not be too overly busy or complicated.

3. Colours
White is the predominant colour for Scandinavian themed homes. From a practical standpoint, white reflects light, and makes the home brighter and more spacious. You can also play with greys and monochromatic designs by mixing patterns and textures. Building from the white, inject some colour into your home. You can layer on splashes of neutral colours like pastel colours and earth tones. Dusty pink and dusty blue work well. In fact blue is Scandinavia's favourite accent colour. Pale tones add colour but they also help to create an inviting atmosphere. If you want to add in a few bright and colourful elements, feel free to do so. It’s a good way to add a bit of personality to your ID as long as the colourful pieces don’t overly dominate the space.

4. Materials
Wood plays a huge part in Scandinavian ID design. Wood can be used on the floors or on furnishings. Other than wood, use natural materials, like leather, wool and cotton.

5. Nature
Bring the outdoors into the home and complete the Scandinavian look with some indoor plants or add colour with a vase of flowers. These plants will add life and make the home look even more warm and inviting.
